Are local backcountry enthusiasts becoming too reliant on technology?

One of the leaders of Prince George Search and Rescue says the same tools that can help in the wilderness can also be a hinderance.

Search Manager Jeff Smedley says GPS and other wireless technology can be useful for backcountry users and searchers alike, but it should never be relied upon without other tools.

"Having the proper equipment when you go out there just helps to make sure when difficulties do arise you're prepared and able to handle them," said Smedley.

Smedley says many trips often take longer than expected, so bringing supplies for night travel is a huge plus.

So far this year, he says Prince George Search and Rescue has had to embark on fewer missions than normal, although volunteers have been helping out with other crews throughout the province.
