Women are the focus of a North District RCMP career forum in Prince George tonight.

Corporal Stephanie Ashton says around 25% of the force is currently made up of female officers.

She says more women are required to help the RCMP better meet the needs of the community.

"The makeup of the RCMP is based upon the census, and what the census has been telling us over the years is that about 30 percent of the police force should be women in order to meet the needs of the communities which we police.  Our commissioner has said that he'd like to see it as high as 35 percent women," said Ashton.

Female police officers will encourage women to pursue a policing career by discussing their experiences.

The RCMP Women's Forum will be held in the Bentley Room at UNBC.  Doors open at 5:00pm and presentations begin at 7:00pm.
