The Fort St. James Emergency Room will be open for nine days during August due to expanded locum coverage.

The dates the ER will be open:

  • August 1 - 2pm to August 2 5am
  • August 2 - 9am to 4pm
  • August 9 - 9am to 4pm
  • August 16 - 9am to 4pm
  • August 22 - 2pm to August 23 5am
  • August 23 - 9am to 4pm
  • August 25 - 8am to August 27 5am

Northern Health spokeswoman April Hughes says that represents greater coverage than in previous months.

She says, in addition, the privately owned medical clinic will be closed today through August 7th.

"The physician who owns and operates the clinic in the community is actually on vacation, so once again, we do have locum coverage that we've been able to work with him on to provide some coverage within the clinic, but there will be a few days when the clinic is closed."

The community has been experiencing ER closures for about six months as a result of a doctor shortage.

A doctor will begin part-time work in Fort St. James in October and two additional doctors will arrive in January.
