The annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup starts this weekend, where people across B.C. can join together to clean up the province's shorelines.

Manager of the Cleanup Jill Dwyer says they want volunteers this year to help with the anticipated arrival of Japanese tsunami debris.

"Every third week in September we try and get people out all across Canada to clean up their local shorelines. People can register through shorelinecleanup.ca, and there are a couple of different ways people can get involved. You can sign up as a site coordinator, people can also participate in someone else's cleanup that's being organized."

Dwyer says the cleanups help the animals that live in the area, as shoreline litter can entangle sea animals or they can ingest it.

The cleanups will start today and go until September 23rd.
