BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair is in Prince George today touring the College of New Caledonia and will be speaking to the North Central Labour Council tomorrow.  Sinclair says he is speaking to the council at a time when 200 temporary foreign workers have been hired by a Chinese-backed mining company at a mine near Tumbler Ridge.  He does not agree with the company's strategy to hire the workers.

"This company intended by their own statements to use these Chinese miners in the majority to mine this for up to ten years," says Sinclair, "this was not temporary at all, there was no intention of it to be temporary, they advertised for jobs saying you had to speak Mandarin, again a barrier, they had 300 applications, they had a hundred interviews they could have interviewed more, they did not find one person."

Sinclair is calling for the work permits to be suspended and an investigation into the hiring to take place.  He says there needs to be assurance no job a Canadian worker can do is being taken by a Chinese miner.
