Prince George, B.C.

Once again Prince George is leading the province when it comes to growth in the new housing market.

Last month the city saw a 78% rise in the number of single detached housing starts compared to June 2011.

Kamloops was the next highest at 65% but the provincial average actually dropped by 2%.

Year to date, Prince George has seen the largest rise in single detached home starts in B.C. at 37%.

Paul Fabri with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Coporation says the upswing can be credited in large part to an improved Northern economy.

"Certainly Prince George and other communities in Central and Northern B.C. have benefitted from the uptick that the resource products industries have experienced over the last couple of years and of course that has led to job opportunity and that attracts people to the area," said Fabri.

Fabri also says the used housing market has heated up in the North but with fewer listings leading more buyers to consider building a new home.
