Following news Tembec will put its Chetwynd pulp mill into an indefinite shutdown by mid September, the District's mayor isn't too concerned about the impact on the community.

Merlin Nichols says the region is seeing a real boom in other sectors and he doesn't expect those left unemployed after the mill's closure to be out of work for long.

"Most of the mill workers are highly skilled trades people who probably will be absorbed into the other industries in the area that are having a difficult time recruiting."

But at the same time Nichols says there is short-term concern and uncertainty for the 115 families affected.

He also says the community won't lay down and accept the closure as inevitable as he and council will continue to work to ensure the viability of all industries in the District.
