Residents of Prince George are being warned to be "bear aware".

Since April, there have been 165 black bear and four grizzly bear complaints.

Six black bears and one grizzly bear have been destroyed as a result.

Bear Aware Community Coordinator Laura Bass says there's several things people can do to keep bears away.

"Make sure that you are maintaining your backyard attractants. So making sure that you are not putting your garbage out on the curb before 4am on the day of pick up, keeping your bird feeders put away, and also cleaning your barbecues and maintaining your compost."

The hot spots this year for bears seem to be the North Nechako area, the east side of College Heights, and the lower portion of the Hart Highlands.
