The Prince George branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association is excited about a new national mental health strategy unveiled by the federal government yesterday.

The strategy, to be implemented over the next five years, will improve access to mental health support services.

Executive Director Maureen Davis says with federal support there will be significant changes and improvements to mental health services.

"So we're going to see a lot more preventative focus come out as well as some significant increases in dollars to actually meet the need," said Davis.

Davis says the new strategy will also take away the negative stigma attached to mental health issues.

Canada is the last of the G8 country to put forward a nation-wide mental health strategy.
