More Condos a Trend in PG

Prince George, B.C.

With the development of another condominium in Prince George, an executive with the Northern BC Real Estate Board says there's a growing trend for downsizing in the city.

Vice President Joni Brown says an ageing population has meant more retirees looking to get out of houses and into lower maintenance homes.

She says the problem has been a lack of good sized, higher end condos for ageing baby boomers.

"People use to come here and make their money and then go and retire somewhere else. We're definitely seeing more people looking to come back here and be close to family, and it's affordable living."

Brown says the ideal home for many new seniors is a larger, high quality condo with enough space for most of their preivous home's belongings and a place that's easy to up and leave from for lengthy vacations.

She expects a planned high-end downtown Prince George condo and hotel development to have strong interest for this very reason, but says it's too hard to say just how popular the idea will turn out to be.
