New Legislation Could Give First Nations Property Rights
A new act being pursued by the federal government could see First Nations owning their own property on reserve. In this year's federal budget, the government committed to exploring the idea of creating the First Nations Properties Ownership Act. Chief Commissioner of the First Nations Tax Commission Manny Jules says this is one a first step in moving past the Indian Act.
"And for the first time we'll be able to pass on our land," says Jules, "as an inheritance to our children and other heirs regardless of their status."
Jules says currently First Nations are working a on a template with federal representatives. He is hopeful the actual creation of legislation will happen soon.
