United Steelworkers narrowly accept Canfor deal
United Steelworkers in Prince George have accepted Canfor's latest offer, but only narrowly.
Chair Bob Matters of the United Steelworkers Wood Council Local 1-424 says the deal sees wage increases, a signing bonus, and cash payments in the third, fourth, and fifth years, though it was only accepted by a slim 52% of the union.
Chair Bob Matters of the United Steelworkers Wood Council says agreement comes after a huge rejection of the initial offer made by Canfor.
"We managed to get what we thought was the most contentious items off the table for the second round," he says. "The fact that it was so close reflects the fact that the membership is not necessarily happy at this point in time, I think there might have been a bit more, but we're confident we got every penny we could out of the company, and we look forward to making sure this industry has a future."
He says local 1-424 has plans to negotiate with West Fraser and the Council on Northern Interior Forest Employment Relations in the new year.
