Nine people reported missing when they failed to return from a canoe trip north of Prince George are safe.

RCMP received a report of overdue canoeists Wednesday afternoon and found the group's vehicle at Summit Lake.

Search and Rescue members were called in Wednesday evening and arrived at the scene around midnight.

The group was spotted by searchers in a plane provided by Emergency Management BC around 8:00 am Thursday.

The trip took longer than expected and the four adults and five children a community outside Prince George were fine.

People who take advantage of trails, rivers and lakes are reminded to set a realistic timeline when planning.

RCMP and Search and Rescue also suggest packing extra food and supplies in case a trip goes long.
