Some surprising news out of Prince George City Hall today as Mayor Shari Green has announced City Manager Derek Bates will be leaving his post at the end of the year.

Bates has tendered his resignation effective December 31st after serving as City Manager since 2007.

Green says Bates' contract with the city was set to expire at the end of the year and he has decided not to renew it.

"He's given us lots of notice so it's a great opportunity for the city to work with him in transition as we look forward to 2013 and new management for the city," said Green.

Green is praising Bates' achievements over the past five years noting the completion of a new Official Community Plan and the successful bid for the 2015 Canada Winter Games among a host of other items.

Green says Council will meet later this month to begin the process of working to find Bates' replacement.
