The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has given its stamp of approval for a policy paper to be viewed at the Union of BC Municipalities Convention this week.

The paper outlines four recommendations to resolve potential issues with a proposed packaging and printed paper product stewardship program.

The program would require producers of these products to take on extra responsibility for collection and recycling.

Environmental Services General Manager Petra Wildaur says one of the main issues is equal service level provision for rural areas.

"The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has a vast interest increasing the service level provided through stewardship programs in our regional district."

The recommendations also cover local government compensation for the management of materials that end up in their waste streams.
