Forest Practices Board Urges Provincial Action
The B.C. Forest Practices Board says the provincial government needs to find some specific numbers when it comes to the amount of forest destroyed by the Mountain Pine Beetle.
A recent report by the board makes a list of several recommendations to ensure a stable supply of timber long-term throughout the province.
Board Chair Al Gorley says some pine beetle damaged land is being reforested while some is not, and an accurate picture is not being painted.
"So exactly what the number will be depends on how much the industry is able to salvage and that could vary depending on markets and technology and so on," said Gorley.
About one million hectares of B.C. forest has been categorized as "not satisfactorily restocked" following the beetle epidemic.
Gorley estimates the total amount of harvestable timber in the province at about 22 million hectares.
