The 1st matchup is versus the Washington Mystics, the defending W.N.B.A. champions — and her old squad.
“I really don’t know if that was by design by the league or what — maybe — but certainly, I’m pretty acquainted with Washington, certainly, but it’s thrilling,” Stanley mentioned. “I advised our crew, you know you only get to be a winner if you enjoy the winner, and so the path for our progress and to the playoff and championship rounds is to participate in teams like Washington. What greater way to start off the time?”
Stanley, a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn., who had been a Mystics assistant coach since 2010, is now at the helm of a reliable mix of tested veterans and young, promising expertise.
But don’t get in touch with it a rebuild. This team is hunting to compete now.
They unquestionably have the pieces: Returning veterans, which includes Candice Dupree, Teaira McCowan and Victoria Vivians — back just after sitting down out final period with an A.C.L. tear — and a backcourt that includes Kelsey Mitchell, Erica Wheeler and Tiffany Mitchell. Also on tap is the 2020 No. 3 total choose, Lauren Cox, and guard Julie Allemand.
But an uphill climb awaits: Their final profitable season was 2015, they have not attained the postseason because 2016 and they completed previous 12 months ranked fourth in the East at 13-21.
Regardless, Stanley continues to be concentrated.
“We want to create a society of winning and a society of players enjoying tricky and taking part in with each other. I would assume you will see us enhance every single time we go out there,” she claimed. “That’s what good teams do, what championship teams do.”
