WNBA players walk off court during national anthem ahead of season opener

Users of the New York Liberty and Seattle Storm walked off the courtroom in the course of the nationwide anthem on Saturday ahead of the WNBA’s season opener in what gamers mentioned will be a year dedicated to honoring Breonna Taylor and other victims of social injustice.

Players from both of those groups walked back to their respective locker rooms during the nationwide anthem and then held a transient instant of silence for Taylor, a 26-calendar year-old Black female who was fatally shot in March when Louisville police have been conducting a no-knock warrant at her property connected to a narcotics investigation.

“We are dedicating this year to Breonna Taylor, an fantastic EMT who was murdered above 130 days back in her home,” Liberty’s Layshia Clarendon reported just before the game.

“We are also dedicating this year to [the] ‘Say Her Name” marketing campaign, a marketing campaign committed to saying the names and preventing for justice for Black women of all ages — Black ladies who are so generally overlooked in this struggle for justice, who do not have men and women marching in the streets for them,” Clarendon ongoing.


“We will be a voice for the voiceless.”

None of the officers concerned in the taking pictures that led to Taylor’s death have been arrested or charged. The Kentucky Attorney General’s Place of work is however investigating.

The WNBA protest will come just times following many MLB teams knelt down in unity in a second honoring the Black Lives Subject movement just before the countrywide anthem was played. Some players also took a knee in the course of the anthem.
