BEIJING, Dec. 7. (Xinhua) – Chinese officials on Tuesday warned that the U.S. government’s boycott of the upcoming Winter Olympics in the capital could jeopardize bilateral talks and cooperation in key areas.
“The United States will pay the price for its mistake,” said Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The Winter Games will be held from February 4 to 20 in the Chinese capital, which already hosted the 2008 Summer Games. At a press conference, the Latin American network Telechere criticized the Zhao White House move and stressed that “the sports world must leave politics.”
A Chinese diplomatic spokesman said the United States was “trying to destabilize the game on the basis of its ideological bias, lies and rumors.
The Chinese government has repeatedly denied human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region and reiterated that these claims are nothing more than part of a “slander campaign”.
