On February 4, 1992, a group of soldiers who identified themselves as the Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement 200 (MBR-200) launched an uprising that sought to overthrow the corrupt government of Carlos Andres Perez, the promoter of neoliberal activities.
Founded by Chavez in the Armed Forces in 1983, MBR-200 is a left-wing civil-military revolutionary movement that follows the ideas of the freedom fighters Simon Bolivar, Simon Rodriguez and Ezekiel Zamora.
Attempts to seize the capital in 1992 were frustrated and the rebels surrendered, after garrisons inside the country were recaptured by forces loyal to the government.
Rebel officials were arrested and deprived of their liberty, but in a speech to the media, Hugo Chavez said the path to hope for Venezuela had not been won “for now.”
