A patient at the Pedro Kouri Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) in Cuba has arrived in the Villa Clara municipality of Pleistocene from South Africa, carrying the Omicron variant of the SARS-Cov-2 corona virus, the Granma newspaper reported today.

The company, which is dedicated to the investigation, prevention, control and elimination of infectious diseases, announced that after testing with positive PCR in Cuba, the patient is a carrier of delta strain of the pathogen causing Govt disease.

The traveler, who arrived in the central province of Villa Clara on November 25, was admitted to the Manuel Fazardo Military Hospital, with no symptoms so far, according to local newspapers Playstas officials.

Neil Reyes, director of health and epidemiology at Villa Clara, described him as asymptomatic and that all of his direct contact was isolated and negative on the first PCR test.

The doctor had previously warned that only the results of the National Reference Laboratory could determine whether there was a new variant of the corona virus called Ómicron, which was classified as alarming by the World Health Organization.

The new strain is spreading rapidly, which is why the Caribbean island’s Ministry of Public Health decided on Saturday to implement new measures to strengthen international passenger control.

One of the resolutions was that people from South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Malawi and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) should be provided with a complete immunization schedule upon arrival.

In addition, a negative result of the RT-PCR made 72 hours prior to the trip will be sampled for SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR, and they will be subjected to seven days of mandatory isolation at a hotel. For that purpose, the traveler accepts accommodation and transportation costs.

A new sample for SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR will be taken on the sixth day and, if negative, will be excluded from isolation on the seventh day.

In the case of travelers from Belgium, Israel, Hong Kong, Egypt, Turkey and sub-Saharan African countries (Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cape Verde, Cameroon, Chad, Comoros, Ivory Coast), excluding sixth day isolation and RT-PCR The same measures as in the countries will be used.

Eduardo Martinez, chief physician of BioCubaFarma, promised through his Twitter account that he would carefully monitor reports of behavior on the new Ómicron variant.

We are already designing specific vaccines. If necessary, we will create in the short term, said the scientist.
