At the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Carla Natalie Barnett became General Secretary of the Caribbean Community (Caricom). The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Hon Gaston Brown welcomed the position on behalf of the other member states.
Teleser Chain Details In his inaugural address, Burnett expressed his desire to help the people of Haiti in the aftermath of the recent earthquake and the drought caused by the Great Depression.
At the same time, he urged the multilateral body to engage itself in finding joint solutions to the economic, social, environmental and financial challenges facing the region.
The Secretary-General called for strengthening the division through permanent dialogue with the Secretariat of all sectors of the community to effectively access key tasks such as youth unemployment, violence, food security and non-communicable diseases.
He also called for a sense of participation and identity in a community in which all citizens want to contribute to creating a sense of “a Caribbean people with a common experience and destiny”.
She is the first woman to hold that position in the international community since serving as Under Secretary of State for Caricature between 1997 and 2002. He is the youngest person to hold that position in the regional organization. In his country, Belize, he served as deputy governor and finance secretary of the central bank.
