WASHINGTON, June 20 (RHC) – At least 12 people were killed when Hurricane Glade hit the state of Alabama in the southeastern United States on Saturday, destroying dozens of homes and causing severe flooding.
Butler County Coroner Wayne Carlock said ten people, including nine children, were killed and several were injured in a 15-car chain crash near the town of Montgomery.
Meanwhile, Capt. Marty vendors of the local violent crime unit said a 24-year-old boy and a 3-year-old boy were killed when a tree fell on their home on the outskirts of Tuscaloosa.
Shortly after the landslide struck Saturday morning, a hurricane-induced hurricane destroyed or severely damaged at least 50 homes in a small town north of the Florida border. Eskombia County Sheriff Heath Jackson said the hurricane “practically washed away” a mobile home park, knocking down trees over houses and tearing down the roof of a high school gym.
Also, more than 20 people were rescued by boat due to flooding in the city of Northport.
The storm caused heavy rain north of Lake Ponsardrain in Louisiana and along the Mississippi coast, flooding the streets and in some areas homes. Later, the storm reached Florida.
This Sunday, flash flood advice was released for North Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina Beach and parts of southeastern Alabama and Florida mangoes. Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center predict that Claudette will intensify into a tropical storm next Monday over North Carolina before heading into the Atlantic Ocean.
