The Taliban celebrate the victory of Punjab
Kabul, Sep 6 (IANS) The Taliban on Monday confirmed the capture of the northern province of Panjri, the last stronghold of resistance to their rule in Afghanistan.
“The province of Panjshir has been completely captured,” Jabihullah Mujahid, a key Taliban spokesman, said in a statement.
A Taliban spokesman pointed out that the seizure of control of the fort by rebel forces had ended the civil war in Afghanistan.
With the capture of Kabul on August 15 and the capture of the remaining 33 territories within two weeks, Banjir province was the only one of the 34 Taliban-controlled provinces of Afghanistan.
According to a spokesman, after fierce fighting, the province came under the full control of the Taliban.
Fighting has intensified in recent days following the failure of negotiations to find a way out of the conflict.
Banjshir was also the center of protests against the previous Taliban government between 1996 and 2001, which ended with the US invasion following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
